• FTTH – Fibre To The Home – It’s the fastest and most reliable fibre connectivity deliverd directly to the premises.
• FTTB – Fibre To The Building. Fibre optic cables are connected to the building and then dispersed further through building infrastructure. The speeds and quality of this broadband connection depends on the type of internal wiring within the building, distance from the fibre optic connection to the particular internal receiver, amount of connections and usage.
• FTTC – Fibre To The Cabinet. Fibre optic cabbles are connected to the local cabined and then to the end users. The speeds and quality depend on the type of cables between the cabinet and the premises. The overal experience can be limited by copper wires constituting that part of the journey.
• Copper wires – this is probably the most common type of connectivity often limiting the delivery of high-speed experience. Copper wires were the basis of landline connections and are currently used to provide DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and ADSL (Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line) internet connectivity. In short it is a telephone line (landline) utilised for internet connectivity na dthe speeds can range from 256kbts to over 100Mbts

Is 5G faster than Fibre Internet?

5G connectivity offers speeds comparable with Fibre but the type of broadband connection will heavily influence what’s faster. SIRO FTTH connectivity offers up to 1,000 Mbits while current commerically deployed 5G networks reach up to 500 Mbits.

There are other factors to consider though. As most of Fibre Internet connections in Ireland are currently in the FTTC spectrum the resulting speeds can be heavily downgraded by the type of cables from the cabinet to the home. Due to the cost of nature of infrastructure it is difficult to address this issue and often 5G internet can be a better option.
