What is Fibre Broadband?
NBI defines fibre broadband as a most reliable and future-proofed type of high speed broadband connection available today. Fibre internet delivers high speed internet connection by using fibre optic cables from local broadband exchange directly to the premise.
The technology usually encompasses several different standards such as FTTC, FTTB or FTTH and the speeds and quality of connection will depend of which of these types of connections are available in your area.
Fibre Broadband Ireland
Although full fibre broadband is a very specific type of fixed broadband connection, the term fibre broadband is often used to encompass different high-speed technologies:
- FTTH – Fibre To The Home – It’s the fastest and most reliable fibre connectivity deliverd directly to the premises.
- FTTB – Fibre To The Building. Fibre optic cables are connected to the building and then dispersed further through building infrastructure. The speeds and quality of this broadband connection depends on the type of internal wiring within the building, distance from the fibre optic connection to the particular internal receiver, amount of connections and usage.
- FTTC – Fibre To The Cabinet. Fibre optic cabbles are connected to the local cabined and then to the end users. The speeds and quality depend on the type of cables between the cabinet and the premises. The overal experience can be limited by copper wires constituting that part of the journey.
- Copper wires – this is probably the most common type of connectivity often limiting the delivery of high-speed experience. Copper wires were the basis of landline connections and are currently used to provide DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and ADSL (Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line) internet connectivity. In short it is a telephone line (landline) utilised for internet connectivity na dthe speeds can range from 256kbts to over 100Mbts
What is SIRO broadband?

SIRO is a new broadband connectivity technology utilising existing electricity network for delivery of full fibre connectivity directly to the premises (FTTH). This type of broadband has no copper cabling at any stage of the broadband delivery what means higher reliability, speeds and overall better user experience.
SIRO Broadband Speeds
SIRO Broadband is currently the fastest type of broadband connection delivering download speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second.
How Can I get Fibre Internet?
Unlike with wireless technologies it is quite easy to check what kind of connection is available through cabled connection. Potential customers usually look at 2 factors when signing new broadband contract:
- Price
- Download Speed
From our experience, in order to avoid confusion and misunderstandings, it is always advisable to talk to a broadband advisor who can not only check the coverage but also advise on how available in your area technology translates into speeds.
The speeds are usually advised as “up to” what means that if a customer signs up to a certain broadband plan offering let’s say up to 100Mbps the speeds will oscilate depending on what type of connection is available. To understand this it is easier to talk to a broadband specialist who will be able to estimate the impact of technology on the results.

How Fast is Fibre Connection?
Fibre broadband speeds depend on the technology used. While FTTH (like SIRO broadband) can deliver download speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second (1,000 Mbps), FTTC with copper lines from cabinet to the premise can often be around 20 Mbps.
Is Fibre Broadband In My Area?
High Speed Broadband connectivity, either FTTC or FTTH is available nationwide but not everywhere as of yet. National Broadband Plan identified intervention areas where subsidised rollout is expected.
To check if Fibre Broadband is available in your area, and what kind of connectivity, and speeds, you can expect, call us or submit lead form for us to call you back.
Is 5G faster than Fibre Internet?
5G connectivity offers speeds comparable with Fibre but the type of broadband connection will heavily influence what’s faster. SIRO FTTH connectivity offers up to 1,000 Mbits while current commerically deployed 5G networks reach up to 500 Mbits.
There are other factors to consider though. As most of Fibre Internet connections in Ireland are currently in the FTTC spectrum the resulting speeds can be heavily downgraded by the type of cables from the cabinet to the home. Due to the cost of nature of infrastructure it is difficult to address this issue and often 5G internet can be a better option.
Fibre Broadband vs. Broadband
Generally, Full Fibre Connectivity offers speeds up to 10 times faster than regular broadband. Broadband is a broad term covering any high-capacity data transmission and can encompass 4G LTE technology, 5G internet, satellite internet as well as fixed wireless and Fibre Broadband.
Can I get Broadband without Phone Line?
Yes. Broadband high speed connectivity can be achieved with other than Fibre types of connection:
- 5G Home Internet. 5G is a wireless technology allowing to achieve speeds comparable with full fibre broadband without the need for costly infrastructure.
- Satellite Internet. Today’s satellite connectivity offers speeds of up to 100Mbps and is a viable alternative to other types of broadband connectivity particularly important in rural areas where development of fibre optic infrastructure is delayed and unlikely to happen in the nearest future.
